Two axes, two kinds of uncertainty
Three to five replicates per level are too few to say how uncertain a response is, yet errors-in-variables calibration weights every point with exactly that number. A new research note by Erik van der Werff treats the two axes differently: the reference uncertainties as stated per material, the scatter of the response as one variance function estimated from all replicates together. The method and the design of its evaluation are set out; the simulation study and an application to real data are planned.

Not rejected ≠ proven
A result that has merely not been rejected is often reported as if it had been proven. A new white paper by Erik van der Werff shows where that happens in conformity decisions, method comparison, calibration and analyser evaluation in gas analysis, with worked numbers, and how a report can keep the undecided zone visible.

Introducing GasCatena
Besides NexChrom, a complementary software product: GasCatena guides laboratories through the gravimetric preparation of calibration gas mixtures, from recipe and weighing to a certificate with GUM uncertainty, and documents every link of the traceability chain. Catena is Latin for chain.

NexChrom in pictures: a tour in sixteen screens
How NexChrom looks in daily use: CDS data straight from the instrument, calibration with residuals, mole fractions with their uncertainty, release by a second person, QC charts and the certificate register. Screens from the development version, with demonstration data.

Introducing the Aura1
A second member of the Aura family: a compact, USB-powered module for temperature, humidity and barometric pressure, with the measurement principles of the Aura2 in a deliberately simple form. Designed for the production of reference materials and calibration gases: next to the balance, GasCatena reads it at every weighing.

New website: NexChrom and the Aura2
The new website presents NexChrom, from CDS file to certified result, and the Aura2 ambient sensor. Both are in development; the first release is expected in early 2027. Laboratories that would like a preview, or to take part as a pilot laboratory, are welcome to get in touch.

Bayesian statistics and AI in analytical measurement
Why measurement uncertainty is more than a single number, and why correlated errors matter: an article by Erik van der Werff on probability distributions, covariances and the convergence of Bayesian statistics, AI and modern computing.

Introducing the Aura2
The first member of the Aura family: a stand-alone module that logs temperature, humidity and barometric pressure on its own, day and night, also on battery. Every value is the mean of a series of readings, reported with its standard deviation. Read it from a browser over Wi-Fi or from your own software, without a cloud account.
